Por Elisa Tenedini“Ocaña” es la segunda exposición comisariada por Yoko Art Gallery de Felipe Almendros (Barcelona, 1976), y también el nombre del famoso local de la Plaza Real de Barcelona, el alma de todas las obras expuestas.
Es necesario recordar que el Bar Ocaña lleva el nombre del gran José Pérez Ocaña (Cantillana, 1947), pintor y actor integrado en los movimientos alternativos de los años ‘70 y figura clave para la defensa de los homosexuales. Almendros y Ocaña son comparables por la capacidad de observar y apropiarse de la vida, una vida brutal, excéntrica, real, cotidiana, callejera y del mágico mundo de la noche.
Para esta exposición, Felipe Almendros realiza una serie de cuadros en los que, con pinceladas rápidas, impetuosas y ásperas, retrata los personajes que captan su atención: aquellas personas que rezuman vida a raudales y con las que el propio artista se identifica. La obra de Felipe es absolutamente íntima, honesta y autobiográfica; desde el principio de su carrera, pone bajo las luces de sus focos personajes y paisajes de su cotidianidad o del estilo de vida que más lo representa.
Se puede afirmar que Felipe Almendros es un flâneur, un Manet de los tiempos modernos que retrata la vida que le rodea, la ciudad, los bares… Un flâneur tal y como lo describía el poeta Charles Baudelaire en El pintor de la Vida moderna (1863), aquel que apartándose de la tradición del pasado tiene la gran capacidad de extraer lo eterno de lo transitorio.
Felipe Almendros hace esto hoy en las calles de Barcelona, así como antes, en los años 70 y 80, lo hizo José Pérez Ocaña, quien en la transitoriedad de su corta vida, revolucionó eternamente la lucha por los derechos LGBTIQ+, la liberación sexual, la libertad de expresión y el término Libertad con toda su complejidad.

“Ocaña” is the second exhibition curated by Yoko Art Gallery of Felipe Almendros (Barcelona, 1976), as well as the name of the famous local in Plaza Real, which is the setting for all the works in the show.
It is necessary to remember that the Bar Ocaña is named after the great José Pérez Ocaña (Cantillana, 1947), painter and actor, promoter of the alternative movements of the 70s and key figure in the defense of homosexual rights.
Almendros and Ocaña are united, in particular, for the ability to observe and make own the life: a brutal, eccentric, real, daily life, a life coming from the street and from the magical world of the night.
For this exhibition, Felipe Almendros created a series of paintings in which, with fast, impetuous and rough brushstrokes, he portrays the subjects that capture his attention: those subjects that exude so much of the life in which the artist identifies himself. For this reason, Felipe’s work is absolutely intimate, honest and autobiographical: from the beginning of his career, he places under the "flashing" lights of the reflectors the characters, and landscapes, of his daily life, or of the lifestyle that most represents him.
We can say that Felipe Almendros is a flâneur, a Manet of modern times: he goes to a bar and portrays the life that surrounds him. A flâneur, acording to the poet Charles Baudelaire in The Painter of Modern Life (1863), he is the one who, detaching himself from the tradition of the past, has the great ability to extract the eternal from the transitory.
Felipe Almendros does this, today, on the streets of Barcelona, as well as before him, in the 70s and 80s, did José Perez Ocaña, who in the transience of his short life, has eternally revolutionized the fight for LGBTIQ+ rights, the liberation of sexuality and expression and, more generally, the word Freedom, in its complexity.
